Every year on February 1 in Tlacotalpan—a city in the Mexican state of Veracruz—bulls are horrifically abused at the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria. They're forced to drink liquor and then set loose on the streets, where they're chased, lassoed, and repeatedly beaten and stabbed. Reportedly, their ordeal continues for hours on end, as drunken residents hurl bricks and trash at them, snap their tails, and even cut off their ears. Although news sources indicate that the Mexican government recently eliminated funding for this bloody festival (apparently, the city is still 3 million pesos in debt from last year's event), resulting in a 30 percent drop in attendance in 2016, it seems that it's still scheduled to take place this February—so your voice is desperately needed.
Please urge the mayor of Tlacotalpan to enforce the ban on torturing animals during the Candelaria festival. Please also inform tourism officials that you will not travel to Veracruz until this sadistic activity is brought to an end, then forward this alert far and wide!
